1 〔意外･不服の気持; …だけれども, …にもかかわらず〕 though…; although…; even though…; in spite of…; despite…; for all…; with all….

●雨が降っているのに even though it's raining; in spite of the rain.

●彼はあんな金持ちなのにまだ満足していない. In spite of all his wealth [Rich though he is], he's still not satisfied. | He's still not satisfied, for all his wealth.

・何度も(いらないと)断ったのに, やるといって聞かなかった. Even though I refused repeatedly, he insisted on giving it to me.

・試験が近いのに彼は遊んでばかりいる. Even though [when] the exams are imminent he spends all his time playing around.

・仲間が皆働いているのに自分だけが寝ている気にはなれなかった. I couldn't bear the thought of lying in bed while all my colleagues were at work.

・弟の方は勉強家だというのに彼の方は(その反対に)怠け者だ. He is as idle as his brother is diligent.

・台風が来るというのに漁に出た船はまだ帰って来ない. Although there is a typhoon approaching, the fishing boats still haven't returned. | There's a typhoon on the way, but the fishing boats are still out at sea.

3 〔(文末で)非難をこめて〕

●早く行けというのに. I told you to hurry, didn't I? | Go on; get going!

・だめだと言うのに. No [It won't do], I tell you! | No, no, no!

4 〔ために〕 for….

●この本は君のに買ってきたのだよ. I have bought this book for you.

・それを切るのにナイフがいる. I need [want] a knife to cut it with.

・本を読むのにめがねがいる. I need glasses for reading [when I read].

・朝ご飯を食べるのに30 分かかる. She takes [It takes her] thirty minutes to eat breakfast.

・このスプーンは子供が使うのには大きすぎる. This spoon is too big for a child (to use).

・このハサミは針金を切るのにも使えます. These scissors can also be used for (cutting) wire.
